A janitor is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and order in buildings, which includes a wide range of tasks like sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors; emptying trash and recycling bins; cleaning and sanitizing restrooms and common areas; and restocking supplies. They also handle minor repairs, report larger maintenance issues, wash windows, and ensure adherence to safety procedures when using cleaning chemicals and equipment.  

Key responsibilities

• General cleaning: Sweep, mop, and vacuum floors; dust furniture and surfaces; and wash windows, mirrors, and walls. 
• Sanitation: Clean and disinfect restrooms, kitchens, and other common areas. This includes restocking supplies like soap, paper towels, and toilet paper. 
• Waste management: Collect and dispose of trash and recycling, replacing liners in bins. 
• Maintenance: Perform minor repairs such as changing light bulbs. Report major maintenance or safety issues to supervisors. 
• Supply management: Keep cleaning supplies stocked and organized in the janitorial closet. 
• Safety: Follow health and safety guidelines, use cleaning chemicals properly, and operate equipment according to safety procedures. 
• Special tasks: Respond to emergencies like spills, and may be responsible for tasks like setting up or cleaning rooms for events.
